General circulation models (GCMs) of the atmosphere are used in weather forecasting and to predict global climate change. The representation of the land surface hydrology in the early GCMs was poor but parameterization of the land surface recesses has improved over the last five years, aided by international experiments such as FIFE(First ISLSCP Field Experiment) and HAPEX (Hydrological Amospheric Pilot Experiment). The focus has ben on the quantification of vertical energy and water fluxes for the range of land uses which are represented in the models. A number of papers in this Symposium Follow this approach.
