Electrical energy has a vital and significant role to play in the economy of any State. In fact, the requirement of power and its availability has ben recognized as the surest index of a country's overall economic growth as it is one of the basic inputs for industrial as well as agricultural development. India has achieved remarkable progress in the field of power development since independence. The rate of growth of installed capacity, though impressive, has not been able to keep peace with the increase in power demand and the country is presently facing perennial power shortage of varying degree in various regions. The gap in shortage increases during peak power demand. To meet the ever increasing power need, the Government of India has been exploring the possibility of tapping the potential of non conventional sources such as solar power, wind power, hydro power etc.
