The need for a book on the use of numerical techniques in environmental and civil engineering was felt during the course of out teaching allied subjects at the senior undergraduate and graduate levels. Although the first- and second-year level under-graduate syllabi on engineering mathematics deal extensively with a variety of modelling tools and solution techniques for handling different types of scientific and engineering of equations, the specific use of numerical techniques in solving problems of hydraulics, hydrology, and contaminant transport is found lacking in the graduation level courses in most colleges.
